FAQs

How did you Get into illustration?

I have always been a creative person. From a young age, I was drawing, painting, crafting and taking every art class available to me. In high school, I fell in love with photography and graphic design, which lead me to study at The School of The Art Institute of Chicago, with a dream of designing for the magazine Punk Planet. After earning a BFA in Photography, I waitressed, scheduled deliveries for Campbell Soup and sold stock photography, until I decided to quit and become a freelance illustrator. It’s been 16 years!

What tools do you use?

I mostly work digitally, but I love to combine digital and analog techniques together. Many of my projects are a combination of pencil, pen, Procreate, Illustrator and Photoshop.

how did you get your start in children’s picture books?

Who doesn’t have a dream of illustrating for children’s picture books?! I was always working towards a big goal from the start of my career. Creating work that aligned with picture books and contacting agents. I credit sharing my work on Pinterest, which is how an editor found me and sent an email asking if I would like to illustrate a picture book. A life changing moment for sure!

How did you develop your style?

I am so lucky to have a mother who saved art work from when I was little. I recently went through it and noticed that I have been drawing the same characters and animals all my life - even similar color palettes! I have refined my style that is always evolving through my interests, artists I admire, and the different tools I use.

what advice would you give an aspiring illustrator?
